Alexander Cooper's
Art Exhibition in Washington D.C. (Nov 22-29, 99)
Art lovers in the Washington Metropolitan Area turned out in record numbers
on Monday
evening (Nov, 22nd 1999) to feast on the work of Jamaican Master painter
Alexander Cooper
at the offical opening of his art exhibition at the Organization of American
States, (OAS) Building
in Washington, D.C.
In his welcoming remarks, Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States and
Permanet
Representative to the Organization of American States, Dr. Richard Bernal
hailed Mr. Cooper
as one of Jamaica's pioneering painters whose remarkable talent in the visual
arts had
significantly contributed to the culture of Jamaica and the world at large.
Assistant Secretary-General to the Organization of American States, Ambassador
Christopher
Thomas who addressed the gathering on behalf of the OAS observed that Mr.
Cooper's
contribution to the field of art was emblematic of the gifted and that the
exhibition was indeed a
celebration of the excellence and professionalism of the artist.
Mr. Cooper in his remarks stated that he was extremely pleased to be given
another opportunity
to share his work with the Washington community which has always been a receptive
and
encouraging audience. He thanked the Ambassador and the OAS for housing the
show and for
their hospitalty.
The exhibition had a rich display of figure paintings and landscapes each
uniquely describing
colorful and vibrant aspects of Jamaican life. Alexander Cooper last exhibited
his work in the
Washington D.C. area in 1965 at the U.S. State Department in which he was
the first caribbean
artist to be invited to show his work their.
The large gathering included representatives from national and regional broadcast
media, the
Washington diplomatic corp, United States Government officals including
representatives from
the District of Columbia.
